What is a Timing Belt?

A timing belt is a flat, rubber belt with 'teeth'. It connects the camshaft and crankshaft inside the engine much like a bicycle chain connects the front and rear sprocket. More importantly it synchronizes the rotation of the valves and pistons to occur at the correct times. Timing belts have replaced chains in many cars today and help make the sophisticated engines we find under the hood  possible. Want to check when your car is due for a belt change?

Essentially, the timing belt keeps the top half of the engine (cylinder head, valves) in sync with the bottom half (crankcase, pistons).

What Happens When Your Timing Belt Breaks?

Your vehicle will come to a stop due to the engine not being in sync anymore. The bad news is that your vehicle will need to be towed to a repair shop to replace the belt. The even worse news is your engine may have suffered major internal damage. This can result in more than just timing belt replacement!

What Can I Do?

The timing belt is an integral part of the engine and, therefore, Subaru recommends that it be replaced during your special 105,000 mile scheduled service maintenance.
